Description
Although Giorgione was celebrated in his lifetime, few pictures can be securely attributed to him. While some scholars attribute this painting to Giorgione, it is more likely to be by a pupil in Venice such as Sebastiano del Piombo, or an artist close to Giorgione such as Giovanni Cariani. The hazy view of the Piazza San Marco from the bacino shows the campanile with a temporary flat-roofed bell-chamber, which was in place from 1489 to 1511.
